ArtCraft's Photoshop alternative: PhotoCraft vs Adobe Photoshop

People searching for the ArtCraft Photoshop app mean PhotoCraft: a free, open-source editor that copies Photoshop's layout on purpose. It is impressive for an alpha, and it is not finished. This page shows where each one wins.

PhotoCraft details reflect version 0.7.0 and the project's own roadmap, checked on October 12, 2026.

The verdict first

Can ArtCraft PhotoCraft replace Photoshop?

For hobby work, quick retouching, layer-based compositing and opening PSD files without paying for a subscription, PhotoCraft is already usable and surprisingly familiar. It is also the only one of the two that runs on Linux and that you can read, audit and modify.

For paid client work on a deadline, Photoshop remains the safer tool. PhotoCraft's developers say so themselves: the app is early alpha, some tools are missing, typography and pro workflows are shallower, plug-ins do not load, and there is no generative AI.

Reasons to switch

Where PhotoCraft is ahead

01

It costs nothing

No subscription, no trial timer and no account. That alone makes it worth installing next to whatever you use today.

02

It runs on Linux

Flatpak, AppImage, .deb and .rpm builds exist for x86_64 and ARM64. Photoshop has never shipped for Linux.

03

It is open

The full source is on GitHub under permissive licenses. You can inspect how your files are handled, fix a bug or build your own version.

04

It stays on your machine

The editor works offline and its selection tools run locally, so client images are not uploaded anywhere.

05

It is built for agents

Because every action is a command, scripts and AI assistants can drive the same engine through a CLI or an MCP server.

06

It feels familiar

Shortcuts and panels match Photoshop's, so trying it does not cost you a week of retraining.

Reasons to stay

Where Photoshop is still ahead

01

Generative AI

Generative Fill and related tools have no equivalent inside PhotoCraft yet. This is the gap the PhotoCraft roadmap lists first.

02

Completeness

PhotoCraft's own notes count 15 missing tools and thinner typography and pro workflows.

03

Plug-ins and integrations

Existing Photoshop plug-ins, panels and many studio pipelines assume the Adobe app.

04

Stability

An alpha will crash and change between versions. Photoshop is predictable in a way a young project cannot be yet.

Closing the gap

How to add generative AI to a PhotoCraft workflow

You do not need Photoshop for the AI step. Generate or edit the image in the browser, then finish it in PhotoCraft.

  1. 1

    Generate or edit online

Open the AI image studio, describe what you need or upload a reference, and choose a model. The credit cost is shown before you start.

  2. 2

    Download the result

Save the image as a PNG. Results stay in your creation history if you need them again.

  3. 3

    Open it in PhotoCraft

Place the file as a layer, then mask, color-correct and add type with PhotoCraft's non-destructive tools.

Bottom line

Who should use which

01

Choose PhotoCraft if

you edit for yourself, work on Linux, want an offline tool, need to open PSD files without a subscription, or like to script your editor.

02

Stay with Photoshop if

you depend on generative tools inside the editor, specific plug-ins, advanced typography, or you cannot risk alpha-stage bugs on client work.

03

Use both if

you want to follow PhotoCraft's progress. It installs alongside Photoshop and reads the same files, so trying it is free in every sense.

FAQ

ArtCraft and Photoshop questions

Clearing up the most common mix-ups.

Is there an ArtCraft Photoshop?

Not under that name. ArtCraft's Photoshop-style image editor is called PhotoCraft. It is an independent, clean-room project and has no connection to Adobe.

Is PhotoCraft made by Adobe?

No. PhotoCraft is developed by the ArtCraft team as open-source software. Photoshop is a separate, commercial product from Adobe Inc.

Will my Photoshop shortcuts work in PhotoCraft?

Mostly, yes. PhotoCraft intentionally places menus, panels and shortcuts where Photoshop users expect them, for example Cmd/Ctrl+J to duplicate a layer.

Can PhotoCraft open PSD files made in Photoshop?

Yes, including layers, masks, adjustment layers and layer styles. Very complex documents may not render identically yet, so compare the result and keep the original.

Does PhotoCraft have Generative Fill?

No. PhotoCraft has no generative AI today. You can generate or edit images with an online AI tool and import the result as a layer.

Do Photoshop plug-ins work in PhotoCraft?

No. Plug-in compatibility is listed by the project as one of its biggest remaining gaps. PhotoCraft has its own plug-in example written in Rust.

Is PhotoCraft safe to use for commercial work?

The license allows it, and the software is free. The practical risk is stability: it is alpha software, so keep backups and test your workflow before relying on it.
